About 400 bus passengers were stranded on the snowbound Kingscote Pass between Underberg and Swartberg in southern KwaZulu-Natal on Wednesday, SABC radio news reported. Four buses, two trucks and two buses were trapped in the snow on the R617 road.
Police spokesperson Dawn Bridger said an area of about 500 square kilometres was covered with snow in the southern Drakensberg mountains.
Snow was still falling and efforts to clear the snow were underway. The road would be reopened late on Wednesday afternoon.
The public broadcaster said temperatures in the snowbound areas had not risen above five or six degrees Celsius. – Sapa
