The Border Bulldogs came from behind to beat the Griffons 40-29 in an Absa Currie Cup first-division match played at the North West Stadium in Wlekom on Saturday afternoon.
The Griffons led 24-22 at the break after earlier taking a comfortable 17-0 lead. They led 24-8 with five minutes to half-time, but the visitors hit back with tries by both wings — Ian Fihlani and Thebani Mkokeli — to trail by just two points at the break.
They managed to control the second stanza and deservedly ran in a further two tries to secure the bonus point.
The Griffons also managed to score five tries, but ill-discipline cost them in the end.
Cavaliers back on track
Meanwhile, the Boland Cavaliers got their Absa Currie Cup campaign back on track with a convincing 32-15 win over the Mighty Elephants in Wellington on Saturday.
The Cavaliers led 22-3 at the break.
The hero for the home team was wing Rayno Benjamin, who crossed for a hat-trick of tries that helped bury the the brave visitors.
The win hauls the Bolanders from second-from-bottom back into semifinal contention. Eastern Province, meanwhile, suffered their third defeat in four matches and face an uphill struggle if they are to feature in the play-offs. — Sapa
