The University of Pretoria’s Gordon Institute of Business Science (Gibs) has appointed former South African Reserve Bank deputy governor Gill Marcus as the Wendy Appelbaum professor of policy, leadership and gender studies from October 1.
Marcus was deputy governor of the Reserve Bank for five years until her contract expired on June 30.
After the contract expired, the South African presidency said they were in discussions with her on her future and there was speculation that she may head up a single financial services regulator, as she was also previously chairperson of the financial services board. Prior to her joining the Reserve Bank, she was deputy minister of the finance department.
“Her personal leadership skills, insights into key policy debates and her relationships with institutions and individuals across all aspects of the South African business community and the broader environment will be a great asset to the school”, said the director of Gibs, Professor Nick Binedell.
“Our goal is to expand the activities of the school to ensure that leaders in business and other institutions are well informed and mindful of the key issues facing the South African political economy, both in terms of their approach to leadership in their organisation, as well as to the strategic choices they make,” he said. ‒ I-Net Bridge
