Covering all the bases

Ingolstadt carmaker Audi has launched its new A4 range, comprising 11 models with three engine derivatives.

At the media launch in Mpumulanga, Audi pointed out that these are not just facelift versions of the previous range, but brand new models in every way — only the roof remains similar.

Audi’s standard single-frame trapezoidal grille, as seen on the A6 and A3 Sportback Avant models will be offered in all new versions except the entry-level 2,0-litre petrol manual and multitronic models.

There is a choice between sports and executive packages as well as the more exclusive S-line exterior trim package from quattro. Sports and executive packages can also be combined with the S-line exterior package, for the ultimate in designer expression.

Aluminium door-sill trims come as standard and there are several finishes available for seats and inlays.

All models have a rain and light sensor, multifunction steering wheel, servotronic, dual-zone climate control, remote central locking, a CD player and electronic windows and side mirrors. Safety features include ESP 8 traction and stability control, six airbags and ABS disc brakes.

Three completely new engines join the A4 range, which comprise the 96kW 20-litre petrol, 120kW 1,8-litre turbo-charged petrol and 253kW 4,2-litre V8 engine.

A 2,0-litre TDI engine replaces the 1,9-litre TDI and produces 103kW at 4 000rpm and 320Nm of torque from only 1 750rpm. A six-speed manual gearbox is standard and a seven-step multitronic CVT option will be available soon.

A 3,0-litre V6 diesel has also joined the range. My launch unit was of the quattro four-wheel drive variety with a manual six-speed box. Power is rated at 150kW at 3 500rpm and a powerful 450Nm of torque is available from a low 1 400rpm — not only does it get out of the blocks quickly, but its road-holding characteristics bordered on those delivered by much more expensive sports cars.

The sweeping corners around the Sabie and Nelspruit areas proved no match for this powerful saloon, and getting it out of shape at any speed proved near impossible.

The new A4 is the first Audi in South Africa to feature the 2,0-litre turbo charged FSI four-cylinder engine, due for launch early this month.

It develops 147kW, peaking between 5 100rpm and 6000rpm, linked with 280Nm of torque available at 1 800rpm, and is linked to either a six-speed manual gearbox or seven-step multitronic. A 3,2 FSI V6 petrol engine will be added to the range in May.

Keeping the new A4s firmly on the road is a four-link front suspension, with a self-tracking trapezoidal-link rear suspension at the back.

I got to drive the 2,0 FSI Avant with multitronic gearbox, which proved to be one of the smoothest combinations ever manufactured by Audi. It is an absolute joy to drive. Those looking for a good family vehicle won’t be disappointed with its opulence, performance, style or space. The seamless gearbox and its chauffeur-type gear changes have to be experienced to be believed.

Audi has stolen a march on rival BMW by getting its new range on to the market ahead of the much praised and anticipated new 3-series. The A4 is a stylish package and, with its broad mix of models has covered almost all the bases.
