A number of construction workers were still trapped on Thursday, two days after a building under construction caved in, killing at least 10 in Nigeria’s southern oil city of Port Harcourt, police said.
The four-storey building on Sani Abacha Road in the city centre suddenly collapsed on Tuesday, burying an unspecified number of people in addition to those confirmed dead.
”The difficult terrain is hindering rescue efforts. We have not been able to save those trapped under the rubble. All hands are on deck,” Rivers state police spokesperson Barasua Ireju said by telephone.
She said rescue workers hope to make some progress by the end of the day.
”Everybody is involved in the operation. Construction firms have sent cranes and other equipment. We believe we can still save some lives,” she assured.
Unconfirmed reports say about 40 people were inside and around the building when it collapsed. — Sapa-AFP
