Soweto train-collision victims doing well

Just seven out of 162 train passengers hospitalised after two trains collided in Soweto on Wednesday night are waiting to be discharged, Metrorail said on Friday.

”We are encouraged by the improvement in the condition of the injured train passengers,” spokesperson Thandi Mlangeni said.

”Since the accident, Metrorail [has] commissioned its social workers to render counselling services to the victims of the accident.”

Mlangeni added that Metrorail is visiting the injured daily.

”Investigations as to the cause of the collision are continuing and Metrorail engineers have ruled out power failure as a possibility,” she said.

”The outcome of the investigation will be announced as soon as it becomes available.”

By Thursday, Metrorail trains were running normally in Soweto.

A train rear-ended a stationary train at Merafe station in Naledi at about 7.30pm on Wednesday.

Both trains were going from Johannesburg to Naledi. — Sapa
