Man in court on race slur charges

A Brackenfell, Cape Town, man will go on trial in October for allegedly saying to a petrol attendant, ”Hey kaffir, come here.”

Adriaan Deacon (30) on Friday made his eighth appearance in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court since the alleged incident involving Phikile Nkqinqa in May last year.

For the alleged insult, he faces a charge of crimen injuria.

He is also alleged to have hit Nkqinqa on the mouth, for which Deacon faces an assault charge.

Deacon initially elected to conduct his own defence but has now engaged defence attorney Jurgen Rysberger, who has tried to no avail to have the charges withdrawn through representations to the local Directorate for Public Prosecutions.

Because of the many postponements, magistrate Joe Magele noted Rysberger’s request that Friday’s postponement to October 21 be the final one.

This means that if prosecutor Howard Andrews again requests a postponement on October 21, it will be refused and Andrews will either have to proceed with the prosecution or withdraw the charges. – Sapa
