Customs officials to help with Beit Bridge backlog

Twelve customs and immigration officials have been sent to the Beit Bridge border post to help the handful of officials dealing with hundreds of frustrated travellers, the South African Broadcasting Corporation reported on Sunday.

Tempers ran high during the day among motorists who had been waiting for hours in long queues to have their documents processed.

Some travellers said they had been waiting more than 24 hours at the border between South Africa and Zimbabwe.

The report said a line of stationary vehicles stretched back about 12 km from the frontier.

Customs officials have refused to comment on the cause of the delay, which is said to be the result of a go-slow on the South African side of the border.

However, Limpopo’s Department of Transport officials have denied that there are problems at the border.

A week ago, it was reported that disciplinary action awaited customs and immigration officials at Beit Bridge.

This was after queues built up at the border due to a shortage of immigration staff to process travellers’ documents.

Limpopo home affairs deaprtment manager Victor Mabunda said those found to be involved in corruption or those who had absconded from their posts, would face disciplinary action. – Sapa
