Gift-wrapped finger fails to impress

A lovelorn Bangladeshi chopped off one of his fingertips, wrapped it in gift paper and gave it to the girl he wanted to marry as a token of his love, officials said on Monday.

But the gesture failed to impress 18-year-old Sahera Khatun, whose horrified father complained to village elders in the north-western district of Gaibandha about the “indecent” gift.

Nayan Mia (20) cut one off his fingertips and gave it to the girl wrapped in gift paper after she asked him to prove his love, district administrative official Amirul Islam said.

“Her father was enraged and the village elders publicly scolded Mia and his parents at a village meeting [last Thursday],” he said. “He tried to win over the girl but unfortunately it had the opposite effect.”

Mia was treated by a doctor for his wounded finger. — AFP
