A seriously injured truck driver was trapped inside her vehicle for about 10 hours following an accident outside Kyalami in Johannesburg, emergency services said on Tuesday.
ER24 spokesperson Riana Beech said a call was received at 7.30am that a vehicle was lying next to the R55 outside Kyalami.
When rescue personnel arrived at the scene, they found the woman trapped inside the wreck with serious injuries.
”She told us that she had been there since around 11pm the previous evening,” said Beech.
The injured woman said she had sent her vehicle in for repairs as the airbag light kept coming on, but the garage had assured her that nothing was wrong.
She remembers that she was on her way home on Monday evening after having dinner with friends, and suspects the airbag deployed as she was driving, knocking her unconscious and causing her to drive off the road.
Emergency services personnel worked until 9am to free her.
”The fire department’s task to free her with the Jaws of Life was made difficult by the way she was trapped under the vehicle with only her head and one arm sticking out,” Beech said. — Sapa
