Jeppestown accused refused bail

Seven of the 18 people arrested after the Jeppestown shootout were refused bail by the Roodepoort Regional Court on Wednesday.

The South African Broadcasting Corporation reported that the accused said the state did not have sufficient information for a successful prosecution.

But the magistrate found the state to have strong prima facie evidence against the accused and declared them a flight risk, as they had provided false names and addresses. All seven were arrested on the scene.

The case was postponed to October 16, said an official who asked not to be named.

Four police officers and eight suspected robbers died in the bloody shootout near central Johannesburg in June.

Two of the men face charges of armed robbery, relating to a hold-up at a Pick ‘n Pay supermarket shortly before the massacre. — Sapa
