Bok legend shot while tackling robber

Former Springbok star Gerrie Germishuis is in a critical condition in hospital on Monday after being shot while trying to tackle a robber at his Johannesburg home.

A spokesperson at the city’s Milpark Hospital said that Germishuis was in a ”critical but stable condition” in the trauma intensive-care unit after being shot three times on Saturday.

He was due to undergo a minor operation later in the day on his hand, the spokesperson, Amelda Swartz, said.

The 57-year-old was shot in the hand and face while trying to protect his wife during the raid at their home in Northcliff.

Germishuis flung himself on one of the two robbers who managed to break free and opened fire.

The former winger played 20 times for South Africa in the 1970s and 80s and at one stage held the record as the Springboks’ leading try-scorer.

South Africa is one of the world’s most crime-ridden countries, with more than half-a-million burglaries or robberies reported last year. — AFP
