Taxis halt operations in Khutsong

Taxi commuters in the Khutsong area were likely to be stranded on Wednesday after local taxi operators suspended services at midnight, the South African Broadcasting Corporation reported.

The suspension came in support of the community’s objection to the incorporation of Khutsong into the North West province, the report said.

The taxi operators are attached to the Merafong Amalgamated Taxi Association in Carletonville.

David Tholwana, spokesperson for the association, said all areas within the Merafong municipality would be affected.

These include Khutsong, Carletonville, Wedela, Fochville and surrounding areas.

More than 600 taxi operators in the area, running about 1 500 taxis, resolved to stop operations until late on Thursday afternoon.

Meanwhile, three teachers and a principal accused of instigating pupils to boycott classes at Khutsong are expected to appear before the education department’s disciplinary committee on Wednesday.

The four are charged with misconduct.

Lessons have been disrupted at schools in Khutsong for more than a month as part of protests against the incorporation of the Merafong municipality into the North West.

Parts of the municipality previously fell under Gauteng. — Sapa
