Armed robbers strike Nando’s outlet

Three men, of whom two were armed, robbed a Nando’s takeaway outlet in Rivonia of an undisclosed amount of money and cellphones, Johannesburg police said on Sunday.

Captain Julia Claassen said the incident happened at the Nando’s outlet on the corner of Calvin and Rivonia roads at about 9.50pm on Saturday. Twenty customers were inside the outlet at the time.

A man allegedly grabbed a customer’s wallet out of his hands while he was busy ordering his food from the counter. The customer grabbed back his wallet, thinking it was a joke. The robber then showed the man his firearm, which was hidden underneath his shirt.

Another two robbers then appeared, one of them armed, and began taking all the customers’ wallets and cellphone. The first robber jumped over the counter and took an undisclosed amount of money out of the cash register.

Claassen said when the Nando’s delivery man returned, he was also robbed of his delivery money.

All three men, believed to be in their 20s, ran away from the scene.

ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said no one was injured in the robbery.

Johannesburg emergency services spokesperson Malcolm Midgley said two provincial ambulance paramedics were among the customers who were robbed. — Sapa
