A third body from the Kingfisher — which capsized and sunk off Oyster Bay this week — was recovered on Thursday, Eastern Cape police said.
The body was found in Henley Klip, a remote area of Oyster Bay, said Captain John Fobian.
The Kingfisher capsized on Monday in rough weather. One of the crew swam to shore and another used the vessel’s only life raft. Another three were pulled from the waves by rescuers. Two other crew members were found dead, while the 11 remaining crew members were presumed dead.
”We accept that they’re assumed drowned at this point,” said Captain John Fobian.
He said the search would continue for bodies.
The crew members were reportedly migrant workers from Zimbabwe. According to the Food and Allied Workers’ Union, fishermen have been on strike for
the last five months.
”Instead of meeting workers’ demands, vessel owners are employing poorly trained workers and skippers, thereby risking their lives,” said general secretary Katishi Masemola in a statement.
Masemola called for better working conditions and an end to ”the exploitation of migrant workers”. – Sapa
