African discotheque vs Afrikaans electro-pop

Two bands, two stages, one crowd. It’s no holds barred at the Red Bull Soundclash on Saturday December 3 at the Suncoast Casino in Durban when two bands from different corners of the genre rings slug it out to win the favour of the crowd to be crowned champion.

For one night only, the Afro-discotheque band Gazelle step into the ring with the Afrikaans electro-pop phenomenon Die Heuwels Fantasties to perform head-to-head over four rounds of musical mayhem.

Each band will have their own stage at either end of the arena and will showcase their musical prowess throughout each round.  For every round, the bands contest for points, determined by the crowd via the applause meter. The band with the most points after all rounds will be crowned king of Red Bull Soundclash.

The rounds include the following:

  • Warm Up — each band plays three of their own songs to pump up the crowd.

  • The Cover — DJ Ready D cuts in a well known song and each band plays a cover version of the song in their own style.

  • The Take Over — Gazelle play one of their hits and on cue from the hosts, Die Heuwels Fantasties take over the song in their style and vice versa.

  • The ‘Sound Clash — DJ Ready D determines a musical style for each heat then cuts in a song for Gazelle to pick up from in the pre-determined style. Die Heuwels Fantasties will then pick up the same style and ‘attack’ Gazelle who will then ‘respond’.
This round ends with each of the bands ‘melting’ the song into one of their own tunes.

  • The Wild Card — Each band plays one more song together with their invited special (secret) guest for the last opportunity to gain the crowd’s affection.

With such furious competitive creativity, the bands from opposite ends of the musical spectrum will end up literally colliding head on to forge a new sound never heard before; a beautiful mutant concoction of their two sounds together. But only one band will remain standing at the end of the fourth round and with the most crowd applause they will be crowned the victor of the second Red Bull Soundclash.
