North West schools closed due to flooding

Hundreds of children and teachers were unable to attend school in the North West on Monday after they were left stranded due to heavy rain and flooding, the provincial education department said.

Seven schools in Zeerust resumed school on Tuesday, however lessons still could not take place at 10 schools at GaMothibi and Revilio in Taung, spokesperson Paul Ntlatleng said in a statement.

“Bridges and rivers were flooded, which made it difficult for learners to cross. Hundreds of learners and educators could not go to their schools due to heavy rain, which resulted to dams and rivers being flooded.”

Affected schools were Lobatla, Lekolwane and Gopane primary schools, Ntlatsang and Phatliso middle schools and Mosekaphofu and Nkabari high schools.

The schools affected in Revilio were Retshegeditswe and Bakang Intermediate, Tshabang and Ikhutseng primary schools and Seolong middle school.

In GaMothibi the Atamelang and Hartsrivier primary and Dawmas and Tontonyane secondary schools were flooded. — Sapa
