Jo’burg theatre pick: April 2011

Georges Bizet’s most famous opera, Carmen, first performed in 1873, has an enduring appeal with its fiery, tragic plot about love and death among Spanish factory girls, soldiers and smugglers.

Joburg Theatre hosts Opera Africa’s new production, featuring top local and international talent. Acclaimed international singers Cristina Nassif and Noah Stewart make their local debuts in the roles of Carmen and Don José respectively, and South African soprano Kelebogile Boikanyo performs Carmen’s love rival, Micaëla. The production is directed by James Marvel and the orchestra is conducted by Timothy Myers, both from the United States. In French with English subtitles.

The Nelson Mandela Theatre, Joburg Theatre Complex, until April 10. Book online at www.joburgtheatre.com or call the theatre’s direct ticketing line on 0861 670 670.
