SA’s Anderson to face up to Djokovic

South Africa’s Kevin Anderson said he would have to play his absolute best to shatter Novak Djokovic’s dreams of winning Wimbledon when the pair meet in the second round on Thursday.

Anderson, the 2.03m tall world number 36, is up against the second seed in a match likely to be played on either Centre Court or Court 1.

Djokovic has lost only one match so far this year, but Anderson is up for the challenge of causing a huge shock at the All England Club.

“At least as far as the foundation goes, I’m pretty clear of what I need to do,” the South African number one told Agence France-Presse.

“If I’m going to win the match I’m going to have to go out there and play some really good tennis.

“I’m going to approach it like any other match, go through my same warm-up routines and spend a bit of time going through the match in my head.

“I’m very excited about it, really looking forward to it and that’s why I play the sport — to be at Wimbledon playing one of the best players in the world.”

The right-hander from Johannesburg saw off Ukraine’s Illya Marchenko on Tuesday in a 6-7 (5/7), 7-6 (9/7), 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 win in a match that was suspended on Monday. — AFP
