Durban art pick: October 14 2011

Opening this week are exhibitions by two of Durban’s most exciting contemporary artists.

Juxta Poses is a solo show of recent work by Terri Broll in which the artist explores the manner in which the juxtaposition of images without a socially predictable order can invite a deeper exploration of the relationship between self and other — and the fantasy that connects them. Oil, wax and photo collages are used to produce arcane images of subtle and layered ambiguity.

The enigmatically titled (…) You Can Trust, Always by Celia Sidler reflects the artist’s abiding interest in the aesthetics and influences of the food and publicity industries. The effects of globalisation on local markets and the role of publicity in influencing consumption are ever present in her projects, which typically are created through the intricate arrangement of found objects. One of her installations is an action at the exhibition’s opening in which an Indian family will prepare mealies for attendees.
