Evicted Alex Residents Promised Temporary Shelter

Government will assist with temporary accommodation for evicted residents of Alexandra, the Gauteng human settlements department said on Thursday.

“The Gauteng departments of human settlements, co-operative governance and traditional affairs and the City of Johannesburg will assist with temporary accommodation to residents of Alexandra who were yesterday evicted from a plot of land by the Red Ants,” said spokesperson Motsamai Motlhaolwa.

He said human settlements MEC Jacob Mamabolo told affected residents that they were going to be moved to Marlboro Emergency Centre and a community hall.

“The Marlboro Emergency Centre has 25 available rooms which will accommodate women and children and also people who are physically challenged, while the remaining people will be accommodated at the municipal hall,” said Motlhaolwa.

He said Mamabolo, together with the City of Johannesburg, appointed a service provider to build temporary structures to accommodate all families.

“We have instructed our lawyers to study the judgment, the legality of the eviction order, and also check the ownership of two properties from which people were evicted,” said Motlhaolwa. – Sapa
