Zimbabwe’s suspension and ensuing pull-out from the Commonwealth has split Africa, with some peers of embattled President Robert Mugabe accusing the ”white Commonwealth” of bullying and others backing the move. Mugabe severed ties with the club of mainly former British colonies on Sunday.
Hopes for a break to the fighting in Liberia’s besieged capital were on the rise on Thursday as a west African military team assessed the situation for the proposed deployment of peacekeepers, due to be discussed at a meeting of regional leaders in Ghana.

Rebels battling for control of Monrovia were pushing on Thursday towards the city centre as the humanitarian crisis deepened in the Liberian capital after nearly a week of fighting.
