Violence ‘could undermine Darfur peace talks’

Ongoing violence in Sudan’s Darfur region threatens to undermine planned peace talks between Khartoum and rebel groups, a British minister said as he flew into the war-torn area on Tuesday. British Foreign Office Minister for Africa Mark Malloch Brown made the remarks a day after rebels said government aircraft had bombed a rebel-held Darfur town.

Sudan floods death toll reaches 89

Eighty-nine people have died in flooding in Sudan as heavy rains that washed away homes and spread water-borne disease continue to batter the country, a government official said on Wednesday. Sudanese officials have described this year’s floods as the worst in living memory with unexpectedly early rains destroying more than 70 000 homes.

Sudanese gangs take to Cairo streets

Marc wears a New York Yankees cap, loves rap music and has ”Los Angeles” scrawled in black ink across his forearm, but he will probably never see the United States. The 21-year-old is one of an estimated one million Sudanese refugees living in Cairo. Poor, jobless and subject to racist abuse, he has few aspirations other than to leave Egypt.
