Coulthard backs Hamilton at Silverstone

Ask Scotland’s David Coulthard about his first British Grand Prix at Silverstone and his brow flickers slightly with exasperation. He had a spectacular 272km/h spin at Bridge corner preparing for the 1994 race, but that was topped for embarrassment when he twice stalled his Williams-Renault on the grid and was moved to the back after failing to get away at the start of the second formation lap.

Can Hamilton win in Monaco?

Lewis Hamilton was this week riding the crest of a wave as the youngest driver to lead the world-championship rankings after his superb second place in the Spanish Grand Prix, held on May 13. On Sunday, he could become the first in grand prix history to win through the streets of Monte Carlo on his first outing.

Whiz kid on the F1 podium

Lewis Hamilton became the first driver for 43 years to reach the podium in his first two Formula One (F1) races when he took a brilliant second place in the Malaysian grand prix in Sepang last weekend. It extended a remarkable introduction to Formula One that will surely not require many more races for a first victory.

Mosley steps up attack on Michelin

Max Mosley, the FIA president, intensified his criticism of Michelin as motor racing’s governing body deferred a decision on what penalties would be given to the seven formula one teams that failed to start the United States Grand Prix. Mosley said that he was not ruling out the eventual adoption of a single tyre supplier.

Williams left blowing in the wind

Frank Williams will be absent from the trackside at Sunday’s Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne and, though this is not a unique occurrence for the 62-year-old team principal, it is certainly highly unusual. ”Saving money,” he said wistfully with a faint smile by way of explanation, and he is right.

Ecclestone put on back foot

Bernie Ecclestone’s high court defeat this month left most of the formula one (F1) community feeling like passengers on an airliner that had just passed through a particularly bruising spell of clear-air turbulence. It all seemed very worrying and uncomfortable, but ultimately you knew you could not do very much more than grin and bear it.
