Czech Tomas Berdych stunned second seed Andy Roddick 6-7, 7-5, 7-6 to reach to the final of the Japan Open on Saturday.
Japan is being lined up as a Bledisloe Cup host in 2009 and could become the base for a new team in an expanded Super 14 competition. The Australian Rugby Union (ARU) said initial talks with Japanese officials about bringing the Wallabies and New Zealand All Blacks to Asia’s top rugby nation had gone smoothly.

World number one Roger Federer put on a vintage display to beat Spain’s David Ferrer 6-2 6-3 6-2 in securing his fourth Masters Cup title at the season-ending event on Sunday. Federer’s victory at the showcase eight-man tournament put him level with Ilie Nastase and one behind the record of five titles held by Ivan Lendl and Pete Sampras.

Ireland’s Padraig Harrington upset Tiger Woods to win the Dunlop Phoenix tournament after an astonishing birdie on the second play-off hole on Sunday. The 2006 European Order of Merit winner bravely blasted his second shot through a narrow gap in a Y-shaped tree after driving into the rough and then pitched to within two feet.
