Mourinho fuels exit rumours

Jose Mourinho has fuelled speculation that he could be on his way out of Chelsea by refusing to kill off rumours that he could leave the Premiership champions at the end of this season. Dutchman Guus Hiddink, now in charge of Russia and reportedly close to Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich, has been widely touted as a possible successor to Mourinho.

Chiefs beat Manchester United in shoot-out

Manchester United’s South African tour was an investment in the club’s future despite losing Saturday’s Vodacom Cup final in a penalty shoot-out against Kaizer Chiefs, Alex Ferguson said. Misses by goalkeeper Ben Foster and midfielder Chris Eagles consigned United to a 4-3 penalty defeat against the Johannesburg-based Chiefs on Saturday.

Scholes: United need to get back to the top

Paul Scholes insists Manchester United must mount a serious challenge for the Premiership title this season after admitting that the club have waited too long to secure domestic dominance. Scholes (31) is currently proving his fitness on United’s tour of South Africa after missing five months of last season with a blurred-vision problem affecting his right eye.

England: ‘World Cup starts when we get on the plane’

It was D-day for England’s World Cup squad on Monday as they prepared to set off for Germany on a mission that they hope will end with skipper David Beckham raising high the trophy in Berlin on July 9. Sven-Goran Eriksson’s men will have one final training session on home soil before they fly to their base camp in the Black Forest resort of Baden-Baden.
