Amelie Mauresmo and Justine Henin-Hardenne stayed on course on Wednesday for their third Grand Slam final of the year when both scored straight sets wins in the quarterfinals of the United States Open. The world’s top player opened with a bogey and looked out of sorts for most of his round over a Royal Liverpool course that was hosting the world’s oldest tournament for the first time in 39 years.
Germany go up against Italy in Dortmund with a slot in the World Cup final at stake on Tuesday, while France and Portugal head for Munich and their clash on Wednesday in the second semifinal. German hopes of reaching a second successive final were dealt a body blow late on Monday with the news that midfield dynamo Torsten Frings would miss the game after being suspended.
Classic match-ups steeped in history and involving teams that have won 15 out of the 17 World Cups contested feature in Friday and Saturday’s spectacular World Cup quarterfinals. It’s a long way from four years ago in East Asia when South Korea, Turkey, the United States and Senegal all gave the last eight line-up an unconventional look.
Amelie Mauresmo goes into the French Open as top seed for the first time, but her hopes of finally banishing the demons that have haunted her at Roland Garros are endangered by a new and unexpected threat. Twelve months ago, no-one would have given credence to the idea that former tennis queen Martina Hingis could still win the one Grand Slam title that has eluded her.
