WP hold on to women’s hockey trophy

In a dramatic finale at the Spar Women’s Hockey Interprovincial Tournament, Western Province (WP) retained their title when they defeated Southern Gauteng on sudden-death penalty strokes at the Hartleyvale Astro in Cape Town on Saturday. The finalists were locked at 2-2 in regulation time.

SA well placed in hockey series against India

South Africa’s hockey women beat India 2-1 in the second Test at the Stellenbosch Hockey Stadium on Wednesday night to go two up in the four-match Spar Challenge series. South Africa won the first Test 2-1 on Tuesday night. The hosts could not have asked for a better start in the wintry Cape weather when they were awarded a penalty corner in the second minute.

Goosen beats Els by one stroke

Retief Goosen made a crucial birdie putt on the 18th hole to win the South African Airways Open by one stroke from Ernie Els at The Links, Fancourt, on Sunday. Goosen posted a 70 for a 72-hole aggregate of 282, 10-under-par, while Els fired a five-under-par 68 for a 283 at nine under.

Gauteng crack open the champagne

Central Gauteng on Thursday were all but celebrating the South African Interprovincial men’s golf tournament title after their fourth straight win with one match to play at the Benoni Country Club. After comfortably defeating current champions Western Province 7-5, the team from Johannesburg now face a showdown with Kwazulu-Natal on Friday.

‘Two world cups for the price of one’

Francois Pienaar, CEO of the Rugby World Cup 2011 bid committee, said on Tuesday that the South African bid process was well on track. With Japan and New Zealand also vying for the right to hold the rugby showpiece, chairperson of the SA bid committee, Mtobi Tyamzashe, said that it made sense to hold the cup in South Africa.
