In a dramatic finale at the Spar Women’s Hockey Interprovincial Tournament, Western Province (WP) retained their title when they defeated Southern Gauteng on sudden-death penalty strokes at the Hartleyvale Astro in Cape Town on Saturday. The finalists were locked at 2-2 in regulation time.
Reigning champions Western Province (WP) and co-favourites Southern Gauteng both won their opening games at the Spar Women’s Interprovincial Tournament being played at the Hartleyvale Astro in Cape Town on Monday. WP showed their pedigree with a 3-1 win over Northerns, while Southerns beat KwaZulu-Natal 3-0.
In the big clash of the day Western Province on Wednesday upset defending champions Southern Gauteng by a solitary goal on the third day of the Spar Interprovincial Women’s Hockey tournament being played at the Randburg AstroTurf in Johannesburg.
Tournament co-favourites Southern Gauteng and Western Province both had emphatic wins on the second day of the Spar Women’s Interprovincial Hockey championship being played at the Randburg Astroturf in Johannesburg on Tuesday.
South Africa’s hockey women beat India 2-1 in the second Test at the Stellenbosch Hockey Stadium on Wednesday night to go two up in the four-match Spar Challenge series. South Africa won the first Test 2-1 on Tuesday night. The hosts could not have asked for a better start in the wintry Cape weather when they were awarded a penalty corner in the second minute.

Retief Goosen made a crucial birdie putt on the 18th hole to win the South African Airways Open by one stroke from Ernie Els at The Links, Fancourt, on Sunday. Goosen posted a 70 for a 72-hole aggregate of 282, 10-under-par, while Els fired a five-under-par 68 for a 283 at nine under.

Central Gauteng on Thursday were all but celebrating the South African Interprovincial men’s golf tournament title after their fourth straight win with one match to play at the Benoni Country Club. After comfortably defeating current champions Western Province 7-5, the team from Johannesburg now face a showdown with Kwazulu-Natal on Friday.
Unheralded Harmony Gold athlete Sipho Ngomane won the 80th running of the Comrades marathon from Pietermaritzburg to Durban on Thursday and at 23 years old became one of the youngest champions.
Francois Pienaar, CEO of the Rugby World Cup 2011 bid committee, said on Tuesday that the South African bid process was well on track. With Japan and New Zealand also vying for the right to hold the rugby showpiece, chairperson of the SA bid committee, Mtobi Tyamzashe, said that it made sense to hold the cup in South Africa.

Springbok coach Jake White has kept faith with most of his winning Tri-nations team when he named the side for the first Grand Slam Test against Wales next Saturday. On Friday, White announced just three changes — two enforced due to injury — to the run-on side that did duty in the last Tri-Nations Test against Australia.
