Rollersport South Africa president Willie van Heerden and his wife, Madeleine, have been identified as the couple killed in Monday’s bus crash in the Free State. Van Heerden was one of South Africa’s top sport administrators, Minister of Sport and Recreation Makhenkesi Stofile said.

The Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) on Tuesday granted businessman Schabir Shaik leave to appeal against his conviction on a charge involving ”a generally corrupt relationship” with former deputy president Jacob Zuma. Shaik had applied for leave to appeal to the SCA after the Durban High Court granted him leave to challenge, on limited grounds, one of two corruption convictions and one of fraud.

Efforts at self-determination by groups of South Africans still face various obstacles, Rhodes University chancellor Jakes Gerwel said on Friday. ”Though there is room to move forward in terms of Article 235 [in the Constitution] it should not be accompanied by the perception of crude ethnic diversity,” Gerwel told delegates at a conference on self-determination.
The brother and sister of the wife of slain Free State official Noby Ngombane appeared in the Bloemfontein District Court on Thursday in connection with his murder. Ngombane, who was gunned down at his home, was the head of the Free State government’s policy-monitoring and evaluation unit in the premier’s office.
The Supreme Court of Appeal on Friday dismissed an application by Winnie Madikizela-Mandela for leave to appeal against various fraud convictions by the Pretoria High Court. Madikizela-Mandela approached the Bloemfontein court in March this year with an application for leave to appeal.
The Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) on Thursday upheld an appeal by Laurie Frazer, who in 1997 made headlines for several failed attempts to get custody of his child, who was given up for adoption without his consent. The SCA set aside his prison sentence and replaced it with a fine, a suspended jail sentence and community service.
Free State Premier Beatrice Marshoff said on Wednesday she was shocked by the murder of Noby Ngombane, a top official in her office. Ngombane was the head of the Free State’s policy monitoring and evaluation unit in the premier’s office. He was the premier and the provincial government’s spokesperson, as well as a close confidant of the premier.

Two of South Africa’s most promising young cyclists were among the five men who died in a plane crash in the Free State on Tuesday, the manager of South Africa’s national cycling team said on Wednesday. Cyclists Jaco de Witt and Jaco Odendaal, along with three others, were on board an Aerostar light aircraft on their way to Harrismith.

A group of Free State farmers’ efforts to raise money with a nude calendar, inspired by the movie <i>Calendar Girls</i>, seems to be paying off despite the outrage of some fellow farmers. The group of eight "nude and well bodied" Viljoenskroon farmers hope to raise money for their local Groenbloem farmers’ association.

About 14 passengers sustained minor injuries when a train was derailed in the Free State on Tuesday, according to police. Police spokesperson Captain Rosa Benade said the passengers were taken to a hospital in Kroonstad. Seven coaches were derailed in the accident shortly before 6pm near Westley, about 10km from Koppies. No fatalities were reported.
