The Springboks arrived back in South Africa on Monday morning after a weekend that promised much but delivered little — except, perhaps, for a large dose of reality for the men in green and gold. The depleted squad slipped into the country under the radar before 7am on Monday.

Carlisle leads SA to hockey whitewash

Veteran defender Lindsey Carlisle celebrated her 200th Test cap with a neat goal that ultimately proved the difference as the Spar South African women beat Canada 1-0 in the fourth and final Test at the Tshwane University of Technology on Friday night. The result wrapped up a series whitewash for South Africa.

Springbok scrumhalf ruled out of tour

Springbok scrumhalf Fourie du Preez has been ruled out of the end-of-year tour after an medical scan on Friday afternoon revealed damage to his groin muscle. Du Preez felt discomfort on Thursday evening after suffering a groin strain at Thursday afternoon’s training session at St Stithians College in Johannesburg.

Springbok contract dispute remains unresolved

The emergency Springbok contract talks between South African Rugby officials and the South African Rugby Players’ Association in Johannesburg on Thursday failed to deliver a favourable resolution, but a players’ strike was not a viable possibility. Another round of discussions is planned for Cape Town on Friday afternoon at which all parties will be aiming for a swift fix to the current problem areas.

Crisis talks over Bok contracts

The South African Rugby Players’ Association (Sarpa) will hold emergency talks with SA Rugby officials in Johannesburg on Thursday in a bid to avoid a potential Springbok player strike, Sarpa CEO Piet Heymans said on Wednesday. Strike threats were reported on Wednesday, but Heymans played down the possibility of such action.

Yellow-carded Boks cleared

The Springbok team breathed a collective sigh of relief after stalwarts Os du Randt and Victor Matfield were cleared on Wednesday after being cited for their scuffle in Saturday’s Currie Cup final. Both men received yellow cards for fighting during the heated title-decider at Loftus Versfeld.

Bok coach sticks with tried and tested team

National coach Jake White named a predictable 28-man Springbok squad at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday for the tour of Argentina, Wales and France next month. White stuck mostly to his tried and tested charges for what will undoubtedly be a gruelling three-Test tour, but handed comeback places to Lions fullback Conrad Jantjes and Western Province scrumhalf Bolla Conradie.

Shock victory for Cheetahs

The Cheetahs won only their second-ever Currie Cup title when they shocked the defending champions Blue Bulls 29-25 in a pulsating final played in front of a packed Loftus Versfeld on Saturday evening. The Bulls led 12-9 at half-time and 25-15 with nine minutes remaining.

Not many surprises expected in Bok squad

Springbok coach Jake White is expected to stick mostly to the tried-and-tested when he names a 28-man squad to tour Argentina, Wales and France next month, although one shock could be in store. The announcement is scheduled to take place shortly after the completion of the Currie Cup final on Saturday evening.
