Govt: Army has role to play in fight against Aids

The South African National Defence Force could be called on to help expand South Africa’s antiretroviral-treatment programme, Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka suggested on Tuesday. There is ”a role” for the force in helping roll out treatment because it is such a labour-intensive activity, she told a moral-regeneration conference in Cape Town.

BAT: Don’t give Manto new tobacco powers

Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang should not be given the ”sweeping” powers set out in proposed changes to the tobacco-control law, British American Tobacco (BAT) argued on Wednesday. David Crow, managing director of BAT South Africa, was speaking on the second day of public hearings on the draft legislation by Parliament’s health portfolio committee.

Cape stadium fracas a ‘storm in a teacup’

Legal and technical experts from the Western Cape provincial government and the City of Cape Town met on Thursday to discuss a way forward on the city’s proposed 2010 Soccer World Cup stadium. Mayor Helen Zille said the experts were seeking a way to ”resolve the development approvals” required for the construction and would continue their work on Friday.

Legal wrangling over Cape Town’s World Cup stadium

Cape Town mayor Helen Zille on Wednesday evening rejected a claim by Western Cape Premier Ebrahim Rasool that the city had committed a major procedural blunder over the proposed Green Point 2010 Soccer World Cup stadium. An angry Rasool called on Zille to summon an urgent council meeting to rectify what he said was an error threatening the already-fragile construction timetable.

ANC E Cape conference disrupted by delays

Problems with delegate registration on Friday caused major hold-ups at the African National Congress’s (ANC) Eastern Cape provincial conference in Alice. Registration, which involves creating a photo identity card for each of the more than 1 700 voting delegates, was supposed to have been completed before the opening session on Thursday night.

Cape Town may lose World Cup semifinal

The Cabinet should take the 2010 Soccer World Cup semifinal away from Cape Town if residents go to court to block the proposed Green Point Stadium development, politicians overseeing sport have recommended. Earlier this week, mayor Helen Zille had warned that the city could lose the semifinal to Johannesburg.

Ramphele: Don’t be surprised at violence in SA

South Africans should not be surprised at the anger and brutality that was sweeping the streets when they continued to refuse to acknowledge the socio-economic inequalities in the country, Dr Mamphela Ramphele said on Thursday. Ramphele was speaking in Cape Town at a conference reflecting on the work of the former Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
