Green Point stadium planning back on track

Planning for Cape Town’s proposed Green Point stadium, earmarked as venue for a 2010 Soccer World Cup semifinal, appears to be back on track following a meeting between city mayor Helen Zille and Fifa local organising committee (LOC) members on Thursday. ”I think the mayor is comfortable right now that the city will not be bankrupt,” LOC chairperson Irvin Khoza said afterwards.

PW Botha on the ‘so-called apartheid policy’

Former president Nelson Mandela at one stage asked PW Botha to re-enter politics and resume the leadership of the National Party, Botha says in a filmed interview with former South African Broadcasting Corporation journalist Cliff Saunders. In the interview Botha says it is well known that Mandela at his own request met him several times, in Cape Town and at Botha’s Wilderness home.

Rath launches new attack on TAC

Vitamin salesman Matthias Rath on Wednesday renewed his offensive against Aids lobby group the Treatment Action Campaign (TAC), saying it should be banned. The attack comes less than a week after a full bench of the Cape High Court granted the TAC an interim interdict against Rath and the foundation.

Manuel airs dating deduction

A tax deduction on the expenses of dating was one of the ”tips for Trevor” that didn’t make it into Wednesday’s Budget. But Finance Minister Trevor Manuel still thought it worth sharing with MPs. He said citizens and civil society organisations had again been generous in offering suggestions for the Budget.

Budget favours ordinary South Africans

Ordinary South Africans — except those who are heavy smokers and drinkers — will be walking with a spring in their step after Wednesday’s Budget. Following the pattern set in previous budgets, Minister of Finance Trevor Manuel has again wooed individual taxpayers with tax relief that will this year allow them to hang on to R13,1-billion.
