There are competing claims to some of the land to which the Constitutional Court has already ruled that the Richtersveld community has a restoration right, it emerged on Wednesday. The announcement was made in the Land Claims Court in Cape Town by the state’s lead counsel in the Richtersveld land hearing.

Aids activists on Thursday challenged Western Cape health MEC Pierre Uys to seek a court interdict against vitamin entrepreneur Matthias Rath, or even have him arrested. The call was made in a memorandum handed over at a demonstration by about 200 Treatment Action Campaign members outside Uys’s office in Cape Town.

The African National Congress needs to find a ”far more dignified” way of dealing with the succession issue, business magnate and former party heavyweight Tokyo Sexwale said on Monday. ”What we are seeing with the [Jacob] Zuma/Thabo Mbeki debacle is less than dignified,” he told an Institute for Justice and Reconciliation symposium in Cape Town.

A Pretoria High Court judge has at the last minute withdrawn his bid for a seat on the Constitutional Court, saying he thinks a woman should rather get the job. However, Judge Essop Patel’s decision also follows a series of letters to the Judicial Services Commission from an unsuccessful litigant who claims Patel is unfit for the job.

Beleaguered Cape Judge President John Hlophe was on Sunday given an opportunity to put his side of the racism row to his peers in the judiciary. And though he left the meeting of the country’s heads of courts immediately afterwards, thumping the door shut behind him, Chief Justice Pius Langa denied that he had stormed out.
The grieving father of murdered mining magnate Brett Kebble told mourners at his son’s funeral service in Cape Town on Tuesday that he would do everything in his power to get to the bottom of his son’s murder. ”Of one thing I am sure, I will do all within my power to get to the bottom of Brett’s death,” vowed Roger Kebble.
The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) claimed to have shut down the clothing industry in the Western Cape on Monday during a one-day strike in the province and in the Eastern Cape. But a Western Cape clothing-industry spokesperson described the shutdown claim as ”a joke”.
President Thabo Mbeki grilled Northern Cape mayors on Friday about underspending on their capital budgets. He also warned that local-level infighting in the African National Congress, which hampers municipal delivery, has to stop. His interventions came during a day-long local government meeting, in Kimberley, with municipal, national and provincial politicians and officials.

Even though the men charged with killing baby Jordan Leigh Norton have been assaulted by fellow prisoners for a third time, a prosecutor argued on Thursday that they would be safer behind bars. Prosecutor John Ryneveld made the assertion in his closing submissions in a bail application by Sipho Mfazwe, Mongezi Bobotyane and Zanethemba Gwada.

Cape High Court judges worked overtime on Wednesday to deal with a barrage of legal action ahead of the midnight opening of the political floor-crossing window. The United Democratic Movement on Wednesday expelled six MPs and MPLs from the party, and the Independent Democrats gave the boot to its deputy leader and Gauteng MPL Themba Sono.
