The head of the International Gymnastics Federation said on Monday the alleged abuse of young Chinese gymnasts preparing for the 2008 Beijing Olympics was a ”very delicate issue”. In a report for BBC Radio aired last week, British Olympic rowing great Matthew Pinsent described children in a Beijing gymnasium being pushed through the pain barrier and said one young boy had clearly been beaten by his coach.

Chinese number one Zhang Lian-Wei believes the presence of Tiger Woods at this week’s HSBC Champions tournament in Shanghai will advance the spread of golf in China by a decade. The self-taught Zhang says the 10-time major winner will massively boost interest in the game in the world’s most populous nation.

Fermented fish sauce sloshed on everything from freshly grilled shrimp to french fries may not be to everyone’s taste, but it’s all the rage on this island off southwestern Vietnam. Phu Quoc Island, about 45km off Vietnam’s coast in the Gulf of Thailand, is famed for making the best fish sauce — or nuoc mam as it known in Vietnamese — in the world, and its 80 000 inhabitants are justifiably proud of their reputation.

The World Health Organisation said on Monday it is rushing gowns and masks to Vietnam to prevent further transmission of bird flu to humans, as it struggles to gauge the scope of infection across the country. The H5N1 strain of avian influenza has killed at least six people in Vietnam.

The World Health Organisation confirmed on Saturday that a fourth person has died from bird flu in Vietnam and warned that a growing number of people are falling sick with respiratory illnesses. The outbreak has sparked an Asia-wide health scare and Vietnam has ordered the slaughter of more chickens.
