South Africa’s 2010 windfall

The South African economy could see a turnover in excess of R40-billion during the Soccer World Cup finals, which kick off at the new Soccer City in Johannesburg in June 2010. In an interview on Wednesday, chairperson of the 2010 local organising committee Irvin Khoza was upbeat that South Africa will host the best World Cup in history.

Arrows hold title key

Golden Arrows could not have asked for two tougher fixtures to end their Absa Premiership campaign -- and to top it all, they hold the key to the championship. Arrows travel to Atteridgeville's Super Stadium on Wednesday night, where they face leaders SuperSport United, and then host second-placed Ajax Cape Town at Umlazi's King Zwelithini Stadium on Sunday.

Sono confident of beating the drop

Jomo Cosmos' Absa Premiership fate is in their own hands. Club owner and head coach Jomo Sono is confident Ezenkosi will beat relegation. Sono will not be pushing any panic buttons or putting any extra pressure on his players over the next 11 days when Ezenkosi's fate will be decided after they play the other two relegation candidates.

Heartbreak for Cosmos as Downs snatch late win

It was heartbreak for Jomo Cosmos at Orkney's Oppenheimer Stadium on Wednesday when an injury-time goal by Mamelodi Sundowns substitute Bryan Aldave plunged Ezenkosi further into the Absa Premiership relegation quagmire and earned Downs a 1-0 win.

Bucs star injured ahead of derby

Orlando Pirates could be forced to face arch enemies Kaizer Chiefs in the Absa Premiership Soweto derby at the Mmabatho Stadium on Saturday afternoon without their midfield talisman, Teko Modise. The Bafana Bafana playmaker faces a late fitness test on an injured toe he sustained in last Wednesday's 1-0 defeat against Platinum Stars at the Johannesburg Stadium.

Downs reach another milestone

Mamelodi Sundowns created a South African soccer record when they reached their fourth successive cup final on Sunday after beating AmaZulu 1-0 at Potchefstroom's Olen Park in the semifinal of the Nedbank Cup. Downs were runners up in last season's Absa Cup -- the Nedbank Cup's predecessor.

Downs reach Cup final

It was going to take something special to win this tight Nedbank Cup semifinal between favourites Mamelodi Sundowns and AmaZulu at Potchefstroom's Olen Park on Sunday. The piece of individual magic came from Downs Zimbabwean international midfielder whose stunning 66th minute goal earned the Brazilians their place in the final.

Platinum Stars face major challenge

Platinum Stars face the biggest match of their short history when they host the African club of the century, Al Ahly, in an African Champions League showdown at Atteridgeville's Super Stadium on Saturday. Facing the holders of the Champions League title -- arguably the best and most successful club side in Africa -- does not scare Stars.

Safa confirms Santana as new coach

The South African Football Association (Safa) has finally confirmed the appointment of Joel Santana as coach of Bafana Bafana, following the resignation of Carlos Alberto Parreira on Monday. The worst-kept secret in local soccer was confirmed in a press release from the body on Wednesday.

Things looking up for Downs

It is starting to come together at last for Mamelodi Sundowns. After failing to defend their Absa Premiership title and sacking one of the country's top coaches in Gordon Igesund earlier this season, the Brazilians have finally turned the corner under caretaker coach Trott Moloto, who replaced Igesund.

Sparks to fly in Cup play-offs

Free State Stars coach Kinnah Phiri is hoping that lightning will strike twice in the same place in one season when they host Santos in the quarterfinals of the Nedbank Cup at Goble Park on Sunday at 3pm. Stars are the only side to have beaten high-riding Santos in the Absa Premiership this year.

Platinum Stars outshine Wits

Two well taken second-half goals by Tsepo Ramokala earned Platinum Stars a hard-fought 2-1 win over a lethargic Wits in a disappointing Absa Premiership showdown played at Milpark on Wednesday night. Wits led 1-0 at half-time. The win boosted Stars' hopes of qualifying for the top eight at the end of the season.
