Coen brothers win top Oscars

No Country For Old Men won the Oscar for best film and its makers, brothers Joel and Ethan Coen, were named best directors on Sunday, giving the bleak crime drama four of the world’s top movie awards. Members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences honoured a wide range of movies, actors and actresses from several countries.

Potter film gets massive release

The new Harry Potter movie drew lukewarm reviews on Tuesday, but millions of ”muggles” are expected to ignore the critics and turn out in droves for the widest release for Warner Brothers studio. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix opened across South Africa, including at the Imax theatre in Pretoria, on Wednesday.

Hollywood auction pits Superman against a Winkie

Sundance opens with call to speak out against war

The Sundance Film Festival opened on Thursday night with an innovative movie harkening back to Vietnam anti-war protests and a call by Robert Redford for an apology by United States leaders. Redford said in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks he, like many others, showed a ”spirit of unity” with President George Bush and others who backed the war on terrorism.

Mission accomplished: Cruise finds movie money

Turns out finding money to make movies was an easy mission for Tom Cruise. Only days after the Mission: Impossible movie star effectively was fired by Paramount Pictures, Cruise, his film partner Paula Wagner and an investment fund run by professional football team owner Daniel Snyder agreed on Monday to a financing package that puts Cruise back in business.
