Tsunami survivors slammed government officials and singled out the South African ambassador in Thailand on radio and the press for their handling of the tsunami crisis. A Pretoria newspaper quoted survivors accusing South African officials in Thailand of incompetence.

A South African accused of being part of a plot to overthrow the Equatorial Guinea government earlier this year said on Tuesday he was relieved to be back home. ”South Africa is a fantastic country which you don’t realise how good it is till you leave it,” Mark Schmidt told the National Press Club in Pretoria. He was found not guilty and released on November 27 ”after months of hell” in detention in the West African country.

Africans should make peace with colonialism and move on, the Angolan ambassador to South Africa, Isaac Dos Anjos, said in Pretoria on Wednesday. Emerging from 40 years of civil war and approaching its second democratic election in 2006, Dos Anjos said Angola is still a country of extremes with little infrastructure.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) may be disarmed of its service pistols if no police officer is killed over a two-year period, said National Police Commissioner Jackie Selebi on Tuesday. Selebi also said he will shortly turn schools into gun-free zones where not even police officers will be allowed to enter with their weapons.

Any person in Iraq runs a very high risk of being killed, said the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) in Pretoria on Wednesday. Responding to the death of two more South Africans who were gunned down on Tuesday in a roadside attack on their convoy, ISS analyst Henri Boshoff said more deaths should be expected.

Two more South Africans were killed in Iraq on Tuesday, the Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed on Wednesday in Pretoria. Foreign Affairs spokesperson Ronnie Mamoepa said the government was still trying to gather details concerning the attack. He said however that the two men had been employed by Omega Risk Solutions, Iraq.

Technically, the wage dispute between the government and the public sector unions came to an end on Wednesday with the state signing a wage agreement and leaving organised labour 21 days to follow suit. Edwin Mohlegedi, chairperson of the Public Service Coordinating Bargaining Council, said he expected all parties to sign on the dotted line.
