Elephants dance to victory

Another 2-0 deficit wasn’t enough to stop orange-clad Côte d’Ivoire from stomping away in its elephant dance. Taking advantage of two handballs by Milan Dudic, Côte d’Ivoire beat Serbia-Montenegro 3-2 on Wednesday night through Bonaventure Kalou’s penalty shot in the 86th minute.

Ghana — Africa’s last hope

Coming into the World Cup, Côte d’Ivoire was widely regarded as the most talented team coming out of Africa. Now Ghana is the lone African team with a chance to qualify for the second round of the tournament, and the vanquished Elephants of Côte d’Ivoire are pulling for them.

Rita rescuers witness devastating damage

Hurricane Rita’s path of devastation along the Texas-Louisiana coast became shockingly clear on Monday, as rescuers pulled stranded bayou residents out on skiffs and army helicopters searched for thousands of cattle feared drowned. In Terrebonne Parish, the count of severely damaged or destroyed homes stood at nearly 9 900.

‘No choice but to abandon’ flooded New Orleans

Army engineers trying to plug New Orleans’s breached levees struggled to move giant sandbags and concrete barriers into place, and the state governor said on Wednesday the situation is growing more desperate and there is no choice but to abandon the flooded city. The Pentagon has begun mounting one of the biggest search-and-rescue operations in United States history.
