Representatives from the world’s major professional tennis associations will meet in London on Friday to discuss the formation of an ”integrity unit” designed to keep the sport free of match-fixing. The meeting comes three days after 18th-ranked Andy Murray became the latest player to speak out about corruption in the sport.

The United States and Germany each won their doubles matches on Friday to move within one point of reaching the Davis Cup final. Top-ranked doubles team Bob and Mike Bryan gave the US a 2-1 lead at Sweden by beating Simon Aspelin and Jonas Bjorkman 7-6 (11), 6-2, 6-3.

Sweden and Germany rallied on Friday to ensure their Davis Cup semifinal matches will be decided on the final day. Thomas Johansson beat James Blake to put Sweden even at 1-1 in their best-of-five series against the visiting United States, and Philipp Kohlschreiber did the same for Germany by defeating fourth-ranked Nikolay Davydenko.

Justine Henin and Serena Williams moved closer to another grand-slam quarterfinal, each easily advancing on Friday to the fourth round at Wimbledon. Martina Hingis enjoyed no such luck. The 1997 Wimbledon champion lost to Laura Granville of the United States 6-4, 6-2 on court two, the ”Graveyard of Champions”.
Maria Sharapova showed little sign of shoulder trouble on Wednesday and reached the second round of the French Open by beating Emilie Loit of France 6-3, 7-6 (4). The second-ranked Russian wasted seven break points in the first game of the match, but then converted both of her opportunities in the third and fifth games.
Venus Williams was one of only seven players to complete a match on Monday at the French Open, with rain again causing havoc on the schedule. It was the second straight day of rain at the French Open, and three delays throughout the day forced organisers to postpone 58 matches.
On Sunday, the opening day of the French Open, Serena Williams struggled through the first set before a long rain delay allowed her to regroup and dominate Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria 5-7, 6-1, 6-1. The eight-time grand-slam champion was broken four times in the first set, and again in the opening game of the second.
Sevilla and Espanyol will play in an all-Spanish Uefa Cup final. Sevilla, the tournament’s defending champion, advanced on Thursday after beating Osasuna 2-0 in the second leg of the semifinals and 2-1 on aggregate. Espanyol reached the last game by beating Werder Bremen 2-1 and 5-1 on aggregate.
