Baby Boks look to defend new territory

Rugby union will break new ground on Tuesday as the under-19 World Cup kicks off in the United Arab Emirates, the first time a major international 15-a-side tournament has taken place in the region. South Africa will be looking to retain the title they won a year ago on home soil after a 20-15 defeat of New Zealand, while local officials hope the tournament could pave the way for senior level events.

Protecting Iraq’s precious oil terminals

A fleet of United States-led warships cruises northern Gulf waters with the task of protecting Iraq’s oil terminals from terror attacks that could hurt both the Iraqi economy and world oil markets. Task Force 58, set up for the protection of Khor Al-Amaya and Basra oil terminals, is probably one of the less well-known, but nonetheless most important, missions of the coalition forces in Iraq, where oil exports account for 97% of revenues.

New world emerges from Dubai’s waters

About 300 islands looking like a blurred vision of the planet’s nations are slowly emerging from the waters of the Gulf, forming an exclusive and sandy world of their own just off the coast of Dubai. Less than two years after work began, 60% of the islands have been raised from the sea floor, says James Wilson, CEO of Nakheel, the company behind the project.
