Mozambique President Armando Guebuza on Thursday called for a probe into the 1986 plane crash which killed the country’s founding leader Samora Machel, a mystery often blamed on apartheid agents. ”I want to reiterate the commitment of the government to find out the truth on the cause of the plane crash,” Guebuza said.

Pop diva Madonna left Malawi on Friday after receiving official permission to adopt a one-year-old boy from the impoverished Southern African country. Her departure brought to a climax a controversial week-long charity visit during which her aides denied earlier reports by government officials that she planned to adopt a child.

South Africa’s Minister of Education Naledi Pandor said the poor quality of public education in Africa’s economic powerhouse will threaten future growth if not corrected. ”We have to redouble our efforts in quality of education,” Pandor said on Wednesday. ”It’s not just a budget issue but a quality improvement programme … If we don’t address it there will be problems with growth later.”
There is mounting evidence that the African continent will become the next al-Qaeda hotbed as the militant group seeks to expand its global operations, a senior expert on terrorism said. ”Al-Qaeda would logically look for Africa,” said Peter Pham, director of the Virginia-based think tank Nelson Institute for International and Public Affairs.
