A former politician and a controversial figure were the only candidates interviewed in Cape Town on Tuesday for a vacant judge position in the Bophuthatswana (North West) provincial division. They are former Democratic Alliance MP Lawrence Lever and former North West acting judge Cecile Zwiegelaar.
African National Congress (ANC) members should not be misled into believing that the media would assist and find solutions for the many challenges facing the organisation, party deputy president Jacob Zuma said on Sunday. He said the media’s only objective was to sensationalise ANC problems.
A doctor who supported former deputy health minister Nozizwe Madlala-Routledge’s view that the health situation at Frere Hospital constituted a crisis has been suspended. Dr Nokuzola Ntshona on Tuesday said that Luvuyo Mosana, the CEO of the East London Hospital Complex which includes Frere and Cecilia Makiwane hospitals, had suspended her on Monday.
Convicted child killer Theunis Olivier is a serial liar who deserves no mercy, the father of murdered six-year-old Steven Siebert said on Tuesday. Briefing the media at the Cape High Court, Thomas Siebert said Olivier had told a lot of lies regarding the events leading to Steven’s death.
Medical experts who declared child murderer Theunis Olivier fit to stand trial should reappear in court to answer allegations that they did not follow proper procedures, the Cape High Court ruled on Thursday. ”Serious allegations have been made against these professional people and they should be given an opportunity to answer,” the judge said.
Theunis Olivier was of a sober and sane mind when he sodomised and later strangled six-year-old Steven Siebert in Plettenberg Bay, the Cape High Court heard on Monday. In his statement submitted to the court, Olivier said he was normal when he committed the crime.
President Thabo Mbeki has urged unemployed South Africans to create their own job opportunities through the setting up of small businesses. Addressing Lwandle community members near Cape Town at a presidential imbizo on Saturday, Mbeki told the unemployed to utilise the several business support programmes which the government had set up for their benefit.
A gripe over pension legislation favouring women appears to have led to Thursday’s hostage drama at the South African Human Rights Commission’s (SAHRC) Cape Town office. SAHRC chief executive Tseliso Thipanyane said the hostage-taker earlier lodged a complaint with the commission about the legislation.

The African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) lashed out at the Mail & Guardian on Friday following the publishing of an article that uncovered structural breakdown and infighting within the organisation. The ANCYL said in a statement that it ”categorically rejects” the claims of an organisational crisis.

The Independent Democrats (ID) has reached an agreement with the Democratic Alliance (DA) regarding the governance of the City of Cape Town, it confirmed on Wednesday. Under the agreement, the ID will become part of the DA-led multiparty coalition, ID council caucus chairperson Simon Grindrod told reporters.
