Making their mark

Dr Marianne Cronje’s office speaks volumes about her. From the framed pictures of her husband and two sons to the neatly stacked documents, everything points towards a woman who is extremely well organised. This serves the senior lecturer in the biochemistry department of the University of Johannesburg well as she juggles teaching and research.

Univen to be transformed by 2010

The University of Venda has been awarded R380million by the department of education for extensive renovations to its run-down facilities, infrastructural developments at student residences and a shift in its programme offerings. ”The university will be completely transformed by 2010,” said acting vice-chancellor Dr Jim Leatt.

School is getting tougher

Grade 11 learners will write a national examination at the end of next year as part of the national Department of Education’s efforts to prepare learners, teachers and parents for a “tougher” school-exit qualification. Schools will receive examples of what the examination, set by the department, would look like beforehand.

New era for SA principals

The South African school principal of the future will have a special qualification in school management to prepare him/her for the job. The position will come with special conditions of service that mean if he/she does not perform, he/she can be removed from the position by the Department of Education.
