Obama expects to clinch nomination next week

Senator Barack Obama said on Wednesday he expected to become the Democratic United States presidential nominee after next week and he is considering an overseas trip that may include Iraq. After a hard-fought primary season against rival Democrat Hillary Clinton, Obama said the general election race will begin in earnest next week.

Edwards drops out of White House race

Democratic candidate John Edwards abandoned his United States presidential bid on Wednesday, while among Republicans challenger Mitt Romney vowed to keep up his struggle to overtake newly crowned front-runner John McCain. Edwards’s decision effectively narrows both the Democratic and Republican field to two realistic candidates apiece.

Want to prevent colds? Start exercising

A long-term moderate exercise programme can reduce the risk of colds among older women, United States researchers said on Thursday. Researchers from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Centre found that post-menopausal women who worked out regularly had about half the risk of colds as those who did not exercise.
