A new confederation of labour unions poses to strip members from existing federations. The Confederation of South African Workers’ Unions will be holding its first congress in Johannesburg on March 8 before being officially launched later that day.

Boni Dibate, chief executive of South African Express Airways (SAX), will face a disciplinary hearing next week over fraud charges involving Transnet funds. The hearing began last October after officials, including Transnet Group CEO Mafika Mkwanazi, heard from a whistle-blower.

The National Association of People Living with HIV/Aids’s turned its guns on its allies as the hunger strike by several of its members ended dramatically. They were arrested after they allegedly forced entry into the Pharmaceutical Manufacturers’ Association’s offices.
Low salaries paid to public officials might be the cause of corruption and the high turnover of staff in the public sector, says a report to the presidency by the Independent Commission for the Remuneration of Public Office-Bearers.

The Pan Africanist Congress is unlikely to unseat its current president, Stanley Mogoba, at its three-yearly national congress in Umtata next month, party insiders say. The lacklustre style of Methodist cleric Mogoba is seen by some as a factor in the party’s poor election showings.
Acting judge Mike Hellens this week recused himself from the civil case between members of the Vanderbijlpark community and steel giant Iscor following an application by David Soggot, legal counsel for 16 applicants from Steel Valley.
Blanche Moila, who in 1983 became the first black woman athlete to be awarded the original Springbok colours, walked off with the Shoprite Checkers-SABC3 Woman of the year award for sport last week.
