South Africa’s official opposition has welcomed the step taken by one of its backbench MPs, Craig Morkel, in taking voluntary suspension. ”[Morkel’s] attorneys were informed yesterday [Tuesday] that he is among the 40 MPs the Scorpions intend to prosecute,” Democratic Alliance chief whip Douglas Gibson said.

The Cape High Court on Wednesday ruled in favour of environmental group Earthlife Africa when it set aside the Director General of the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism Dr Chippy Olver’s authorisation of construction of a pebble bed modular reactor.

The ruling African National Congress’s Mninwa Johannes Mahlangu has been elected unopposed as the new chairperson of the second chamber of South Africa’s Parliament, the National Council of Provinces (NCOP). Mahlangu was first elected to the National Assembly in 1994 but became deputy chairperson of the NCOP in 2002.
Liberals are engaged in a fight to ensure the dominance of their ideas in the debate about what constitutes political change in South Africa, but African National Congress supporters must fight an ”ideological struggle” to determine the dominant ideas for the transformation of South Africa, says President Thabo Mbeki.

In his New Year’s message, President Thabo Mbeki has taken note of South Africa’s good economic performance in the past year and says the country has established itself "as one of the best-performing economies in the world". "We are therefore well set to achieve new successes in the new year," he said.

South Africa ranks low in the bribery stakes, according to an international survey published by Transparency International — but it joins the majority of surveyed countries in the consensus that political parties are most affected by corruption. The survey was conducted among 50 000 respondents from 62 countries.

South Africa’s Communications Minister Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri has called for greater "legitimate" government involvement in the governance of the internet. The minister told the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (Icann) meeting in Cape Town that: "We believe that legitimate governments as the true representatives of their country, should have an increased voice in the governance of the internet."
