SA crime statistics under fire from tourism

The absence of detailed statistics relating to crime on tourism hampers efforts to get a true picture of the situation, says Deputy Minister of Environment and Tourism Rejoice Mabudafhasi. The police’s administration system ”does not provide for a distinction between crime against tourists and crime against the general public”, she said.

ANC backs posts for Zulu commissioners

The African National Congress in KwaZulu-Natal backs the filling of a proposed posts for parliamentary commissioners to the Zulu king from the ranks of provincial MPs — and would not oppose an Inkatha Freedom Party candidate. This follows a row between IFP leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi and Premier Lionel Mtshali.

SA museums receive cash boost

The South African Department of Public Works is to spend millions of rands this year to upgrade various museums around the country, including the renovation of the Kruger House museum in central Pretoria. More than R20-million is also to be spent on the harbour at the Robben Island museum complex.

Millions for Mbeki’s golf course

The maintenance, restoration and construction of prestigious accommodation for top South African politicians and key officials will take nearly R90-million out of the Department of Public Works’s building kitty during the current financial year.
The department has a budget of R1,9-billion for all public buildings in nine of the provinces.
