Federer clears first hurdle at French Open

Roger Federer cleared the first hurdle in his campaign to finally land the only Grand Slam title missing from his collection at the French Open on Monday. World number one Federer, still missing a Roland Garros title among his 12 Grand Slam trophies, saw off world number 40 Sam Querrey 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 in his first-round match.

Bayern, Bolton seal Uefa Cup berths

Italian striker Luca Toni inspired Bayern Munich to a 6-0 rout of Greek side Aris to book their berth in the Uefa Cup knockout round on Wednesday as English side Bolton advanced without kicking a ball. Two goals in either half from Toni maintained Bayern’s decade-long unbeaten UEFA home record and defenders Christian Lell and Philipp Lahm completed the rout.

Nadal on course for French Open hat-trick

Defending champion Rafael Nadal pulled no punches as he crushed close friend and former winner Carlos Moya in straight sets to move closer to a third straight French Open title on Wednesday. The 21-year-old cruised to a 6-4, 6-3, 6-0 victory against the 1998 champion to set up a meeting with in-form Serb Novak Djokovic.
