Boks trounce World XV

A youthful and relatively inexperienced South Africa trounced a star-studded World XV 32-7 at a miserably cold, wet and blustery Walkers stadium on Sunday. Having led 10-0 at the break, South Africa scored three tries in the second half to finish their end-of-year tour with their second win from four outings.

White: Bok victory bodes well for 2007

Springbok coach Jake White labelled Saturday’s 25-14 win over England at Twickenham in London as a ”huge psychological boost” ahead of next year’s World Cup. White’s men are in the same pool as England in September and, as he noted, ”no side who has lost their pool has gone on to win the World Cup”.

We threw it away, says White

South African rugby coach Jake White said on Saturday that his Springbok side threw away what would have been their first victory against England at Twickenham since 1997. The Springboks surrendered an 18-point cushion to lose 23-21 and gift England coach Andy Robinson some breathing space as he battles to keep his job.

Polling station boosts Brakpan booze sales

A bottle store owner in Brakpan said on Wednesday the nearby polling station had given his business a significant boost. ”Sales are much better than a normal Wednesday and a bit better than any other public holiday,” said Joao Achadinha, owner of Sherwood Liquors. ”I actually wouldn’t mind if they had an election more often. This is great.”

Ngam and Boje back in the mix

Paceman Mfuneko Ngam and left arm spinner Nicky Boje were on Monday recalled to the South African cricket side for the upcoming tour of New Zealand. Both lost their places due to severe injuries — Ngam to another stress fracture while Boje broke his ankle while fielding in England last winter.

Windies plunder SA attack

Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Ramnaresh Sarwan plundered an ordinary South African attack at Centurion on Sunday to win the fourth one day cricket international by seven wickets and keep the series alive. Chasing the hosts’ imposing 297 for four, the Windies surged to 300 for three with 30 balls to spare.
