Are the Afrikaners not free enough?

Some people simply lack a sense of occasion. It gets worse when these are public representatives. There was Freedom Front Plus leader Pieter Mulder smiling to the cameras this week. Feeling good about himself that he had got ”his people” the attention of the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organisation whom he hoped would extend recognition to the Afrikaners.

The anti-Brazilian

Mpumalanga Black Aces coach Kenny Ndlazi, who will lead his side to the Nedbank Cup final on Saturday at the Johannesburg Stadium, has at least one attribute nobody can take away. He is the only South African coach to occupy the bench when a South African national team beat their Brazilian counterparts.

SuperSport and Ajax teach the rest a lesson

Regardless of how they fare in this weekend’s final matches of the football season, SuperSport United and Ajax Cape Town have a lot to be proud of. Both have had a season made in heaven. Considering that both lost influential coaches — SuperSport’s Pitso Mosimane joined the national team brains trust and Ajax’s Muhsin Ertugral went to Kaizer Chiefs — they were expected to struggle.

A derby of mediocrity

Conventional wisdom has it that this weekend’s Soweto Derby will be the worst since the PSL was founded. For the first time in years both Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates are having their worst seasons simultaneously. Chiefs are ninth on the log, two places higher than their rivals from across the Orlando railway line.

Green mambas must strike

After two dismal seasons on and off the field, the appearance of Amazulu among the last four clubs remaining in the Nedbank Cup represents a fragile chance to reclaim a tarnished legacy. Last season the lads from the coastal kingdom finished second last on the log, but escaped relegation from the Premiership by winning play-offs against rivals from the lower first division.

Sindi, my hero

It was Sunday around noon in 2003 when two voice messages in quick succession made it clear I needed to get to my cousin Ndo’s house in Mapetla urgently. Sindi, Ndo’s younger sister, was gravely ill. She had been diagnosed with HIV a few years earlier and things looked bleak. Yet on that day she refused to be taken to hospital.
